What's So Great About Being 55?

I turned 55 end of last year.

Well, I qualify for 2023's Cost-of-Living Seniors' Bonus this coming June!

LOL!

So I'm "officially" Senior Citizen now?

Not really.

To qualify for Senior Citizen discounts at the supermarkets and take concession travels with our public transport, I have to wait till I'm 60.

I guess this COL Seniiors' Bonus is salve for constantly being reminded I look old at the supermarket checkouts,

"Sir, do you have your Senior Citizen Card?"

Or maybe it's a "conspiracy" to get me to use the self-payment machines???

Poke me until I cannot tahan no choice die die have to use the self-payment machines just to avoid the annoyance of being reminded I'm old fogey oredi :(

"Hello! I look so old meh?"

Yes, I do look old.

So what's so great about being 55?

Nothing.

I'm still the same me. Mentally at least. But the body...

All things being equal, if a genie appeared to let me choose whether I would like to be 18 again, but I would lose everything financially I've built-up, I wouldn't hesitate one second!

It's like pressing the reset button on your favourite role-playing game.

Would you do it?

  1. It is great being 55 and CPF became like a Bank with PayNow for cash withdrawal. :-)

    1. CW,

I different from everyone and anyone.

My CPF has the barest minimum legally possible after 55. Wink.

That feel good "I am different" didn't last though....

Now all I see is everyone and anyone can't wait to move their CPF out to T-bills, fixed deposits, and what not!?

Wait. I've now become everyone and anyone?

      LOL!

The only consolation is I've always acknowledged CPF is good, but not that good for me to voluntarily contribute to it!

I guess it's never too late to realise there are better Save More vehicles OUTSIDE of CPF!

What you gonna do with puppies? Ball rolls there they run after; stick throw there they fetch.

Put in; take out. Woof, woof.

      Cat people just meow.

  2. Hi SMOL,

It is funny isnt it? How we used to see older people as old when we were young. Now that we ourselves are older, we dont feel old and wonder why people view us as old.

I see the age from 55 to 60 as a period your body uses to prepare your brain / mind to get ready to accept ageing. Let me share my story. I wrote the below last year 26 Dec.

    60s is a dangerous age

An ex senior collegue once told me that 60s is a dangerous age or stage of life.  He said this is the stage or age where your body and mind are most out of sync. Your body is slowing down but your mind is still performing as before. And you think you can continue to do the things as before because your mind said so, but your body will have a way to let you know.

I was in my late 40s then and couldnt appreciate the gravity of that message. But now at 61, not only do I understand it, I am also suffering the effects of this de-sync between mind & body.

I am now sitting at home, unable to walk because I pulled my calf muscles badly in a tennis game on Boxing day. We have upped our tennis game frequency from one game every two weeks to twice weekly. I now have the double whammy of tennis elbow and the pulled calf muscles.

My mind finally understood my body signals and I have cancelled all tennis games going forward. I will just focus on swimming & walking for exercise.

This is one of life's curve balls. Most of our plans are based on a healthy us, that is when we are well and healthy.  Have we injected scenarios where we are sick, immobile or have dementia? How would your finances pan out?

Talking about dementia, an ex-collegue has gone missing because of dementia.
Hope that she is safe and can be found.

    1. mysecretinvestment,

Yup, young that time can practice that bullshit called "Mind Over Body"...

Now as old fogeys, if we try it again, our bodies will go on strike!

Dementia can be scary. Both mom and dad already exhibit mild signs of it. Can remember and tell me stories of what happened 60-70 years ago, but what they had for breakfast they sometime can't recall!?

I'm a citywalker; I walk for my physical exercise.

As for my intellectual stimulation and mental gymnastics, I trade.

I don't play bridge or have mahjong kakis, so trading it is!

That's why I often poked those who "over plan" to 2 decimal places.

There're so many vagaries in life that debating about the 4% withdrawal rule is futile...

      What if tomorrow never comes?

      There!

      All our present worries "solved"!

    3. Sillyinvestor,

Those who can't do it anymore... Coach (Teach). Wink, wink.

Wars are fought by young men; the spoils of war are divided by old men.

      You figure it out.

    4. Haha... I think belittle coaching.

Not everyone who can play can coach. Not everyone who coach well play well.

    5. Sillyinvestor,

      LOL!

      You more alert now!

I couldn't agree with you more!!!

The adjectives whether one is good, mediocre, or just plain bad do matter a lot more.

What nouns we call ourselves - either player or coach - don't matter as much ;)

  3. Well, smol, I got a shock 4 years when I got letter saying I am on elder shield.

Not used to be called "elder"

But physically I am old, my eyes flowers le, but I am more active than before.

Some of my pupils always ask if the young and suave coach coming, ahahaha. I joked that unsub like an old uncle coaching u right, they say also "short" ahahhaha... Went for competition I other schools, the canteen ask the pupils if the young coach is their got or borther. I ask if she said the same thing about me, ahahhahaha... Now, no luck ahahahaha...I jokedthat they should not buy from that canteen, and they really go tell the canteen auntie, and she SD all look like gor.. so embarrassing. Like I begging for it. Ahahha

    1. Sillyinvestor,

Secondary school that time, I was puzzled why my Chinese language teacher had to raise his glasses to the top of his forehead to read near stuffs.

      Now I know!

Been doing that the last few years now...

Oh! I would press the reset button without skipping a beat!

      Money all gone no problem.

Imagine 18 all over again but having my knowledge and "crash got sound" experiences built-up over 5 decades still intact, I believe I can earn them all back and then some!

      That's not the important part.

Chasing girls at 18 is a lot more fun than at 55!!!

      LOL!

    2. ahahha... smol

That is cheating, you are traveling to the past, not pressing the reset button.
If you cannot bring your money, what make you think you can bring your memory

Like that i also want. I know which stock to all in liao, money where got issue when I go 18... I meet with AFC somemore. I can hit toto every week

Reset means you have memory up till your 18, you have another chance to make different choices only la

      YOu still want? ahahhaha

    3. Sillyinvestor,

You go read the last few sentences of my blog post - I stated it quite "clearly"...

You own self make your own "assumptions" that's on you.

Not sure you got read Shakespeare MacBeth. That's how we snake-oil witches let you make your own "assumptions".

When you reset and restart your mobile gacha game, do you still retain the lessons and mistakes learnt prior?

If not who so stupid to reset everything all over again???

But once reset, you now have an edge over other newbies right?

We do this "reset" all the time in our lives, no?

      1. Go out with girl, got dumped. Reset, try again.

      2. Marry, divorce, remarry.

      3. First job, don't like. Press reset. Change job.

      4. Fail as trader. Reborn as investor.

      5. Fail again as investor. Now convert to Save More.

      Wink.

  4. Ahhaa... Fair enough...
Just that all your reset need not have the wishful thinking of becoming 18 yourself again ...

U marry and remarry, u are still older and carry the scared with u... U wanted an 18 body

U reset a game with knowledge but can never catch up with someone still playing ...

Buddhism believe in forced reset, hard reset of all hardwares long as considered "not working properly", but hard disk all gone. Ahahha

    This is going nowhere,
I answer your qn, those cheat reset, I do without a beat too, what dileman is there. Is wishful thinking

Now, u cannot carry your memory and skills, u answer my parameters, reset or no.

Come on his just for fun, how difficult is it

    1. Sillyinvestor,

      Of course it's going nowhere!

There never was any destination in the first place ;)

Hello, we are merely "talk male-chicken" here OK?

Eh... You and I have revealed we are not that rich...

      No sunk cost fallacy?

If we are billionaires, would we be so quick to be 18 all over again to start over and give up all the money?

      Hmm...

      Ding!
