What do you want to be when you grow up?

Remember this exercise when we were in primary school?

I am always envious of classmates who are so clear on what they want to be:

I want to be a teacher!

I want to be a doctor!

I want to be a fireman! (Now that's cool or what? What's with boys and fire engines?)

I want to be...

I never can answer such questions.

It's quite evident from "My Story" that I have ding ding dong dong in quite a few jobs. Even though I spent 14 years in my previous company, I still average a new "position" every 3 years in that organisation...

What do I want to be?

I still can't give a straight answer even now when I am very middle-aged...

I get bored easy?

I need to move on to new pastures like the wildebeest in Africa? Always migrating, always on the move?

And people ask why I still single?

  1. Hi SMOL

You have the journey, you have your own version of peak and now you have your view. Now you can say you have " everything" ;)

    1. B,

I can't have "everything". I am throwing quite a bit out from my backpack ;)

Come to think of it, you are right!

The more space I create in my backpack, the more capacity I create for "everything"!?

      Am I making sense?

  2. I think most of us been through this phase of cluelessness! At least you now know you want to be the "man of leisure" (whatever it supposed to mean) ;-)

    1. Richard,

Here's a bit of fun fact for you:

“Leisure”, Aristotle observes, “is necessary both for the development of excellence and the performance of political duties.” The man of leisure, as he says in the Nicomachean Ethics, stands a better chance of obtaining excellence and happiness than does one constantly consumed by daily cares and woes.

    2. What you want to be when you grow up - everyone asking the same to the kids; dare to dream starts from young so this is really so wonderful. Wrong?

Marriage - What is good for others, also good for you too?

    3. Money Honey,

      1) I am envious of those who grew up to what they dreamt when young.

      2) On certain nights, I do think of her.

  4. Guess I am more fortunate/ unfortunate than most, what I wanted to be since primary school, doesn't change. Here I am doing what I always wanted. It wasn't what I thought it to be, but similar enough to keep going at it.

I ask myself is this what I want to be when I am 3 years into the job, and was contemplating very seriously for a change, into the insurance line, was preparing for the exams modules and reading the books my friend passed me to prepare for the financial exams. Luckily or unluckily, never tool the plunge.

I have many atimes, people asking me why I am doing what I am doing now. It sound really cheesy, but I said:" I know how it sound like, but really, it has been my childhood dream to do what I am doing now" Guess my ambition never grow as I grow. Hahaha.

    1. sillyinvestor,

      I envy you.

Very few people fulfilled their childhood dreams.

I think I never have an idea what I want to be because I never want to GROW UP?

      LOL!

  5. i know someone (my wife's niece) who from Primary School (gifted school) or Secondary knew she wanted to obtain a scholarship to study oversea. She went all out for it doing all the necessaries to obtain the scholarship. In the end she realised her dream on a GIC 's Scholarship studying in US. And when she was back working for GIC Singapore, she aimed to be posted in Europe to work. She also had prepared for this aim by taking foreign languages but french is her forte. After her stint in GIC Singapore, she is really posted to Europe. i think now in London.
Of course she has been traveling all over Europe with her friends, before. i think sometime alone.
    But guess what?
She likes paintings , photography, writing best from what heard and saw. And never about making more and more money for herself. Many of her cohorts on GIC 's scholarship are so, so much into the money by now, she divulged.
Such a really gifted soul and not really after money aka self investment.
This is a case where "Fact is Stranger than Ficttion".
    Hardly can believe, right? Right!

    1. temperament,

What do we want to do when we grow up? Most of us assume it's a job or vocation.

I think you wife's nice got the best reply - do what she enjoys:

      painting,
      photography,
      writing.
      travelling,
      languages

I think most people have money goals simply because they have no idea what they want to do!?

      No hobbies; no life.

  6. Most do not think what they want to achieve with the money. Sometimes the reason is just insecurity. Therefore, seek the security money can bring.

    1. pf,

      I understand this "insecurity".

When I was in Robinsons and the Big Sale was still the real thing, I've witness customers grabbing the nearest sale item (just in case), and then proceed to find the sale item that they came for in the first place.

Those were the mad house days!

  7. Your generations can have good dreams!

I didn't want to grow up like my father doing daily-rated job.

    No work. No money!

Everyday looking up at heaven. No heavy rain please!

    1. CW,

What you say is the truth!

I started at Metro with daily wage of $12 per day - but that's for students waiting for our O' level results.

Pay got higher once I signed on to be permanent sales assistant based on monthly salary.

Life got even better when I discussed new offers on annual salary terms.

And I knew I've made it when I negotiated terms based on contracted years basis.

Born in 1967 - I like to think I've progress together with Singapore.

      I can't complain.

I have many things to be thankful for - striking the genetic lottery to be born in Singapore for starters.
