It will never happen...

The thing about middle age is that we have seen and experienced too many things...

Once upon a time, I was like youth - it will never happen one!

Or so I thought...

That's the strenght of youth!

Not knowing what cannot be done.

But when old fogeys slam the table and exclaim with confidence - it will never happen...

I simply smile.

What's the point of arguing?

Did you expect things to get so out of control in HK?

  1. Didn't expect Government to ban PMD on pedestrian path in GE year to lose those angry voters.

    1. How many of those affected vote for PAP?
      Think of it another way,
how many of those who are angry with PMD vote for PAP?

    2. 1. WolfT,

I see what you see ;)

      2. CW,

Lets just say the silent majority living in HDB heartlands are a lot happier and relieved.

After the previous 60/40 swing, quite a few of the former it will never happen "sacred cows" have been slaughtered ;)

Just to name one example, lao lee was gracious although he wasn't too pleased when they brought chinese dialects back.

Well, the last thing you want is to win the battle but fxxk-up the end game...

  2. Hi SMOL,

Young pple, old fogeys...they are all the same if they had not experience enough to be humbled and be open-minded to possibilities. Age is neither a sufficient nor necessary condition for experience.

May we all have the wisdom to know when to stick our necks out to say things with confidence and when to stick it back down to say I'm not sure.

    1. LP,

Yes, there are children and young adults who never had a childhood or experienced youth...

And then there are seniors who only had one year of adulthood times 50 - never explored, never moved outside of their comfort circle, never took a risk, and never really let their hair down...

Hey, better be safe like a condom!

My wisdom comes from the hardest source - crash got sound :(

If only I can gain wisdom from reading books or listening to others telling me what to do ;)

  3. Hi SMOL,

I remember smiling to myself when I read about certain high networth families "geographically diversifying" their offspring. Beyond books and articles, I personally heard from an insurance agent before that he has serviced high networth individuals who sought for assets beyond his home country.

Guess I better start reading up on Estonia's e-residency......

    1. Unintelligent Nerd,

      Shh...

Don't create alarm to pandas and koala bears.

      It won't happen one...

Depending on just bamboo or eucalyptus leaves for all your meals?

      What could possibly go wrong?

Then again, there's a reason why the 2 above animals are on the endangered species list, while humans are thriving so well...

We humans eat anything and everything - especially us Chinese!

  4. Hi SMOL,

Just as I was feeling quite smug having some dumb luck to buy Dairy Farm at its year low on 29 Oct 2019 then seeing the stock moving up, touching $6.50 last week, the escalating civil unrest in HK is sending the stock price nose diving again! I could just be a day away from being back to square one and then see the price testing $5.56 before nose diving further. :(

HK could not get any worse and the demonstrations were losing steam, or so I thought!

What happens in HK will happen in Singapore? Hopefully not in my lifetime lah. I'm a koala leh. -.-"

Better learn to eat grass in case the eucalyptus trees all get burnt down. Otherwise, gotto drink north-west wind.

    Wait...

Can settle the stomach but habitat gone. How?

    1. Endrene,

This is not the easiest time for trading as a tweet or two can suddenly move the markets in ways that we least expect.

Unless we are day traders - who must be loving the volatility ;)

Tip: Whenever you see tourists taking pictures of you, act super cute and cuddly. You koala you.

There's your ticket to a new habitat and long term meal ticket!

      Be a pet :)

  5. The HK situation is a fascinating (although tragic) case study.

It opened my eyes and show me how easily people can be manipulated. People in China, HK and SG each have our views depending on what kind of news coverage they've been seeing, or allowed to see.

Well, that WAS the intention. Those with a little more critical thinking and resourcefulness would be watching live-streams and trawling Twitter!

    1. Kevin,

Wars are fought by young men; the spoils of war divided by old men...

I remember watching an old interview documentary of one of the Tiananmen student leaders who managed to escape to Canada.

Now middle-aged, he recounted in their youthful didn't know what cannot be done bravado, they honestly thought through CNN coverage, the outside world would come and "fight" with them...

When I see the current HK protestors waving foreign flags, I guess they didn't know their history.

      This is not new.

When we say we want to quit our jobs to be an entrepreneur, what do those who don't matter (colleagues and casual friends) will say?

Of course they will cheer us on!

      Do it!

      Go for it!

But when your business not doing well and you go to them for a loan...

  6. The advantage of studying history is the realization that things that people think will never happen actually happened before. When it happens in the now, the past can be used as a guide for the future.

    1. hyom,

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

One of the sneakiest way to manipulate people is to give them false hope.

That poison pill was cleverly planted in 1997.

All those years when they were in charge, where got democracy and the right to choose your own government?

But when they decide to throw HK under the bus in 97, did HK people got any say whatsoever?

Those smart HongKongers who have the means left before 97, got their foreign passports as hedge, then returned to Hong Kong to continue their work or businesses.

There are those who focus on what they can control and influence.

Then there are those who spend time on matters they neither have any control nor influence.
