The video below is 13 minutes long.
The dry humour is hilarious!
Watch it with an open mind, and don't get caught up with the climate change debate. That's not the purpose of this video.
How?
Hold that thought
Read this old post from my early blogging days when I was still working in Athens:
Lies, damn lies, and statistics!
Hope you can apply what you've learnt to your investing/trading. Wink.
P.S. What? You can't think for yourself?
So definitely can't do "Trust but Verify"?
Fundamental analysis (you do yourself kind) is game over for you?
No worries!
There is always plan B as in Technicial analysis. Never mind its actually voodoo...
Just draw some cartoon lines here and there, plus the ability to recognise repeating patterns, you'll be good to go! (Stay away from Elliot Wave though. It requires some brains)
Everyone chooses their statistics for their own purposes.
ReplyDeleteSame as the sugar industry, Gov, etc...
Even within the people within the environmentalist, they choose data to justify themselves doing something or not doing something.
It's all a numbers game. The lies we tell ourselves.
Early Retirement SG,
DeleteYup.
That's why we joked in the management steering group to never trust a statistics that we have not personally manipulated ourselves ;)
The 1MDB saga is an example for bei kambings who thought buying stock analysis from independent research firms would be better than sellside vested interests - only to find out its just as easy to pay someone to write "advertorials" masquerading as stock calls...
Big daddy is also fighting back against foreign funded vested interests pretending to be "Singaporean" speaking for Singaporeans...
That's the reason why the pen is mightier than the sword!
Hi SMOL,
ReplyDeleteThis topic about manipulation always gets to me, because sometimes in my job, I feel i'm manipulating young minds too. Motivation and manipulating is a very thin line. But I think motivation is when the intention is for the benefit of others, while for manipulation, the intention is for the benefit of yourself. Still a very thin line.
Statistics is just a method to manipulate/motivate pple. I've shown students statistics that 100% of my students get at least a B in a particular subject. I said that to ease their fear. Manipulating them or motivating them? haha
Even this post is a technique to manipulate/motivate readers. More to motivate readers to think for themselves I believe haha
LP,
DeleteThat's why its important not to get "trapped" by words; yet at the same time, knowing what words to use can be a powerful asset when it comes to getting work done through others ;)
Motivation/manipulation is similar to public relations/propaganda ;)
Which is which does not only rest on the "intention" of the shepherd...
It depends a lot on the bei kambings too ;)
Some have holes in their hearts so big even when their shepherd is proven to be a fraud or liar, they still will not accept it.
I remember a case some years back where a woman was so lonely and desperate for love that she even scolded the astute bank officers who called police and prevented her from transferring hundreds of thousands to her "Nigerian" lover...
She even acknowledged she knew about internt love scams, but no, her boyfriend must be "genuine"...
Me?
I definitely am a snake oil!
I'm "scamming" my readers for free coffee. Economy must be bad... Long time no free drinks liao :(
Your snake oil not powerful enough? So nobody is paying for a cup of kopi
DeleteCW,
DeleteMust be.
Either that or I should change tactics and stop poking and start cheerleading to people what they want to hear:
You can do it!
If you think you can, you can!
If I can do it, so can you!
Look! Its easy! No brains needed lah!
LOL!
We choose what we want to see.
ReplyDeleteAnd what we want others to see.
That's also how financial engineering comes about isn't it?
Rainbow girl,
DeleteIts also know as "makeup" ;)
LOL!
