I poke myself

Wait.

Don't be so eager.

First, some foreplay to get us into the mood:

mrbrown's Joseph Schooling Bandwagon List of Shamelessness

Singapore National Olympic Council warns local corporations against jumping on Schooling's coattails

I'm shameless

If you look at my "Popular Top Ten Posts" at the right, can you spot the shameless post?

Yup, its that Dr Richard Teo Keng Siang post.

I can give all the crap excuses like:

a) It was done during my early days of blogging... I don't know!

b) There was no intention to increase page views by leeching on to the topic of the day...

c) Others also doing it what?

Let's call a spade a spade. I was shameless. Period.

The road to recovery starts from admission; not denial.

Crash got sound

When I start to receive page views that were not from the usual readers in our community, surprise turned into embarrassment...

I realised what I've done wrong.

I've stumbled onto one of the secrets to Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

That's why when I want to add my 2 cents to a current event nowadays, I'll wait a few days; and more importantly, I'm now more aware what not to use as my post heading.

That hollow and empty feeling

Ever felt like it before?

A bit like being a substitute who never played a single match with the team that won the Championship? Would you go round telling others about your "achievement"?

How about if I go buy that Phd from a degree mill and start putting a "Dr" in front of my name? Who am I kidding right?

That's how I felt each time I look at my Top Ten Posts.

How I wish I can delete that post and pretend it never happened.

But no.

I left it there as a constant poke to myself - don't do that again!

Making mistake is OK; but making the same mistake twice is not OK!

  1. Smol,

Still dun see what is wrong with a post comment of Dr Richard...

Unless u deliberately wanting to board the "bandwagon", somethings the bandwagon is so bloody big that we talk about it, deliberately not talking about it also sama sama against "free soul" what

Oh... Ya... While a bit shameless on the commercial entities, some are red with envy with the 0.8 million prize money. I say it is easier to win toto since every year got winner

Oh that MP, never liked her anyway, despite liking the party she is from. Better not come to my voting ground without the tailcoats of giant

    1. Sillyinvestor,

Typical "iron teeth" you. I said I was shameless; and you want to dispute it?

      LOL!

Knowing what I know now, I would have used another post heading that's more "me":

      What if tomorrow comes sooner?

      Everybody loves a winner.

You can see the same behaviour here in our community ;)

Human behaviours have not changed for the past 5,000 years...

I trying to put on my best behaviour and pretend to be an ant for a minute, and you have to come and "grasshopper" me ;)

      I piggyback on mrBrown's pokes.

You say I got play Pokémon Go or not?

    1. Jimmy,

All I can think of is Cersi Lannister's walk of shame in Game of Thrones...

      Shame! Shame! Shame!

      LOL!

I guess some corporations have to do a bit of soul searching when it comes to making profits versus social responsibility.

Never see you donate or sponsor a single cent towards sports in Singapore; all of sudden become "born-again sports evangelist"???

That's the problem when the pendulum swings too much towards goal setting, KPIs, milestones targeting; etc.

Thankfully, ranking of schools is now scrapped.

      There's hope.

The pendulum is swinging back towards the grey grey area of Values.

Let's hope the youths of tomorrow don't grow up to become like some of the opportunistic parasite adults of today...

And that includes me. I was shameless too :(

  4. Hi SMOL,

I guess it's the usual "He wins, we won; He lost, he lost" kind of thing going around here. I don't subscribe to such things, hence I don't really watch sports. My kind of sports that I do is more individualistic kind, with no team to support lol

I don't have the most popular blog posts in my blog. Prefer to let people discover them haha! I don't see why I should spend more resource making the popular more popular lol I think mine is for per week, just to see what people are clicking on.

I think there's a silver lining to this idol worshiping too. It gives people hope that their children can also adopt a different path and succeed. Oh, and having more children learn swimming, which is a lifeskill, is not going to be such a bad idea too.

    1. LP,

Thanks! You have given me an idea for my next post ;)

I think its the other way.

It gives children hope they can pursue alternative path like sports, and succeed without the sledgehammer of "sensibility" being hammered on them ;)

JJ, Stephanie Sun, Kit Chan have helped opened an interesting path for those who wishes to pursue a career in singing.

I see quite a lot of music and drama schools doing quite well in Singapore. Some even for pre-school children!?

Some parents have woken up that if their child have the confidence to sing and dance in front of an audience, they can surely give speeches and kick ass sales presentations in corporate!

You know, typical kiasu Singaporeans; anything to give their children an edge over others ;)

      LOL!

  5. I saw the rise of such rah-rah training for young kids. I would absolutely hate it should my parents send me there for training. I'm just not that kind of person and would stress my introvert self a lot lol

Hope to read next post soon haha

    1. LP,

Some kids must be face-palming themselves.

Their kiasu parents would insist they take up after school - besides the usual tuition for grades, piano/violin for music appreciation, drama class for confidence building - now must take up swimming too!

      But mom... I'm a gamer!

I would like to be a pro-gamer when I grow up...

      Faint, crash.

      Mom, mom. Are you OK?

Gamer wannebes out there. Tell mom about the million dollar prizes for TI6 Dota 2 ;)

Just you wait. We will have our own millionaire pro-gamer one day.

No, I don't think you'll be invited to Parliament, but you'll be GOD in LAN arcades underground.

      And that's super cool!

  6. Give our boy a break! He won with heart and hardwork. His family should be given great credit also. I watched videos on Phelps post 8 gold haul victory in beijing, in the USA it was umpteen times more crazy for the gimmicks.

Support before the success not only after.

All about credit snatching isn't it?

Just like woman only get close to a man after he become rich!

My most popular post is "baby delivery cost!" as irrelevant on my blog as ur Dr Richard Teo post! Hahahaha

Many times, important things in life, we tend to ignore and take for granted, the unimportant matters, we covet like treasure.

    Write an article header
"How to get rich in 60 days!"
I am sure my view rates surge!

    1. Rolf,

There's one angle in the Joseph Schooling story that no one talked about:

The amazing "big heartedness" of Americans!

      1. They gave a sports scholarship to a non-USA citizen to study in their university.

      2. Give world class training to Schooling; never mind they are training a non-American born and breed to compete with their own hero Micheal Phelps.

      3. Heard any American whining and complaining about Schooling's win or trying to steal credit for his success?

I wonder how some Singapore born and bred Singaporeans will react if the tables were turned?

      Now that's really shameful!

    2. yes agree totally. Not just in Swimming but their top universities are training chinese, Indians n rest of the potential elites of the world.

This big heartedness of the Americans to me is one reason why they rise to the helm of the world.

Of course there are many more negative traits of the country today that will drag them down.

    3. Rolf,

China during the Ming dynasty closed its borders to the outside world.

India after independence from colonial rule embarked on a policy of import substitution.

When we stick our heads into the sand, the world would pass us by.

When I trade currencies, I don't insist only Singapore born and bred can trade with me - no, where's the fun in that?

I was so impressed with the Danes and the Dutch when I visited Denmark and the Netherlands. Many can speak 3-4 European languages.

The reason is simple. Small countries must trade and compete with the rest of the world.

Those who speak only one language in these small countries? You find them at supermarket check-outs...
